In today's world there are so many voices expressing their 'wisdom' on what our president, our governor, our leaders, and we as people should be doing in response to the events around us. Many of these voices are arrogant, many professing to be wise, many fearful, many disdainful of others, many echoing the 'wisdom' of others. The strong & healthy may feel safe, the rich try to pay their way through these difficulties, but in the end, we are all simply human, hoping for a solution and an end.
When the prophet Jeremiah penned these words, God was speaking to him about the pending catastrophe that was about to come upon Israel. The crisis of today does not compare to the severity of what Israel was about to experience, but these words from God Himself express the response of heart that He is seeking from all of us in these times.
Jer 9:23-24 Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD."
It is God's practice, His way of doing things on the earth at all times: Steadfast love - that never ceases, justice - His constant movement to make wrong things right, and His desire to see righteousness throughout the earth. These three things He is always working towards, though from our perspective we often do not see him working in these ways. But this is part of what He desires to show us, to bring us into partnership with, to know Him in how He governs the all things. Remember, that though He does not cause men to choose evil or act out of the evil in their hearts, regardless of the actions of men or demons, God works everything together for good, to those who love Him and are called according to His purposes. Rom 8:28.
